Q2. How did you start this band?
I didn’t start this band. My sisters Sara and Lizz Fay did that. I was there though. The first ever Ian Fays gig was at a frozen yogurt shop in Arcata, CA. The Fays managed to get an eight-dollar Casio keyboard from a Grandma Nonnie yard sale deal but still lacked a keyboard stand. They played it on the floor.

Q3. Who is the artist from whom you were influenced?
That differs among band mates. I’d have to say David Bowie. I will now answer for my band mates. This is more honest than what they would have said anyway. Lizz: Eddie Money, Sara: Britney Spears, Samu: Eddie Vedder.

Q4. What are you just doing (release, live, recording, promo, study, work, vacance, etc..)?
We currently live in San Francisco and play out in the Bay area quite often. We have a mini NorCal tour coming up with our dear friend Johnny Render. The Ian Fays are signed to We were Never Being Boring out of Bolonga, Italy. We tour Europe once a year. And as far as work goes, we are all Special Education teachers.

Q5. What do you value most in music life?
The weird people you meet. People do not get involved in the music industry because they are normal. I have met so many weirdo club promoters and possibly schizophrenic sound guys. And after the gig is over, that’s a story to tell. You will just never think Offenbach, Germany the same way. I guess I need to thank these characters. Without them I never would remember where I have been. They make travel poignant.

Q6. What was the first tape, record or CD you bought for yourself and when?
The first CD I ever bought was Ace of Base’s The Sign in the early 1990′s. My mom took me to The Wherehouse, a chain store no longer operating that mainly rented videos. I was trying to decide if I wanted to rent “Don’t tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead” for the 12th time when I saw it. For sale, a real CD, and it was Ace of Base. I used my own money on that type of greatness.

Q7. What is most favorite music now?
I still really like my Ace of Base CD.

Q8. What is the dream in the future?
Sometimes I dream I could go to the grocery store and not add up in my head how much money was in my cart. If I could dream anything, it would be to always have enough money for what’s in my cart. Even if I bought two packs of ginger tea. That’s a dream.

Q9. Please Message to readers.
Once we did an interview in Holland for a magazine aimed at teenage girls. They asked us to offer advise to young women reading their magazine. I’m sure they wanted something about fulfilling dreams and being creative. My sister bluntly said, “Just don’t put out”. I feel that may be the single best message I can reiterate to readers.

バンドを始めたのは私じゃなくて、姉のSaraとLizzなの。私もその場にいたけどね。はじめてのライブは、カリフォルニアのアルカタにあるフローズンヨーグルトの店でだった。ノニーおばあちゃんちのヤードセールでカシオのキーボードを8ドルで買ったんだけど、スタンドがなかったから床で弾いてたの。

Q3 影響を受けたアーティストは？
メンバーによって違うけど、私はDavid Bowie。他のメンバーについても私が答えるね。それぞれ自分で答えるよりも正直な答えになりそうだし。LizzはEddie Money、SaraはBritney Spears、SamuはEddie Vedderかな。

Q4 今どんな活動をしてる？（リリース・ライブ・レコーディング・プロモーション・勉強・仕事・休暇など何でも）
今はサンフランシスコに住んでて、ベイエリアでよくライブをやってる。友人のJohnny Renderと一緒に北カリフォルニアだけのミニツアーも予定してるわ。イタリアのボローニャ発のWe Were Never Being Boringに参加してて、年に一度ヨーロッパでツアーをするの。仕事はみんな特殊教育の先生をしてるわ。

Q5 音楽をやっていて一番大切にしている事は？
ヘンテコな人たちに会えること。音楽にかかわってる人って大体普通じゃないの。すっごくヘンなクラブのプロモーターとか、病んでるのかなって思うサウンドエンジニアとか、たくさんいたわ。ライブの後、話のネタが尽きないの。ドイツのオッフェンバッハでのライブの後なんて、もうあの街の見方がすっかり変わっちゃった。そういうヘンな人たちには感謝しないとね。おかげで、どこでツアーしたか覚えてられるもの。旅の印象を強烈にしてくれるの。

Q6 最初に買ったテープ・CD・レコードは何だった？いくつの時？
はじめて買ったのはAce of Baseの『The Sign』。90年代の初めの頃。母がThe Wherehouseっていうレンタルビデオ屋さんに連れて行ってくれたの。今はもうないんだけどね。10回以上借りた『ドリーム・ガール／ママにはないしょの夏休み』って映画をまた借りようか悩んでる時に目にとまったの。本物のCDが売られてた。Ace of Baseのね。素晴らしい買い物だったから、自分のお金を使ったわ。

Q7 今一番ハマってる音楽は？
今でもそのAce of BaseのCDはお気に入り。

Q8 将来の夢は？
スーパーで値段を気にせず、カートに何でも放り込めるようになったらいいなって思うことがあるわ。好きなものをいくらでも買えるの。ジンジャーティーを2袋買ってもOK。夢だわ。

一度、オランダのティーン向けの雑誌のインタビューで、読者の若い女の子たちにアドバイスは？って聞かれたの。夢を叶えるにはとかクリエイティブでいるには、とか、そういうのを期待されてたんだと思うけど、姉はただひと言こう言ったの。「先延ばしにしないこと」。今まで聞いた中で最高のメッセージだから、ここで繰り返させてもらうわ。

Q2. How did you start this band?
Me and my drummer Frank started the band back in High School, in 2007. We sat next to eachother in math class and we would listen to our i-pods and draw. I drew keyboards, and Frank drew little pandas. Then I started going to his house to play music.

Q3. Who is the artist from whom you were influenced?
I draw inspiration from artists who charm and intrigue me, like Elvis Presley and Neil Sedaka.

Q4. What are you just doing (release, live, recording, promo, study, work, vacance, etc..)?
We just released our “Panduh Party! ep” and our next show is here in Modesto, CA on March 20th with Calvin Johnson (owner/founder K records).

Q5. What do you value most in music life?
Getting to spend time with my best friend Frank and eating pizza after a good show!

Q6. What was the first tape, record or CD you bought for yourself and when?
I’m not 100% sure it was my first CD but I remember buying Willa Ford-I Wanna Be Bad Single at Best Buy and my mom looked at me funny for it

Q7. What is most favorite music now?
I’ve been listening to a lot of A-1, he’s a local hip hop artist from San Francisco.

Q8. What is the dream in the future?
I would like to be able to play rock n’ roll for the rest of my life and be happy

ドラマーのFrankと2人で高校時代に始めたんだ。2007年だった。数学の授業で席が隣で、2人ともいつもiPodを聴きながらラクガキしてた。僕はキーボードの絵で、Frankは小さいパンダの絵。それで、そのうちあいつの家に行って一緒に演奏するようになったんだ。

本当にはじめてのCDだったかは確かじゃないんだけど、Willa Fordの『I Wanna Be Bad』のシングルをベスト・バイで買ったら母親に変な顔をされたのは覚えてるよ。

Q7 今一番ハマってる音楽は？
A-1をよく聴いてる。サンフランシスコ出身のローカルなヒップホップアーティストなんだ。

これからもずっとロックをやって、楽しく生きていきたいな。

Q2. How did you start this band?
LP: We met in 2007 outside a bar in Virginia, talked about music for hours, and we’ve been inseparable ever since.

Q3. Who is the artist from whom you were influenced?
CJU: Recently I’ve been listening to a lot of music from my early childhood: The Police, Tears for Fears, Peter Gabriel. I love rediscovering an album from an earlier period in my life and reconnecting to it, but in a totally different way. I did that this past summer with Nirvana’s ‘MTV
Unplugged’ album and My Bloody Valentine’s ‘Loveless.’
LP: I love Joni Mitchell’s lyrics, Patti Smith’s attitude, Tom Petty’s swagger, Broadcast’s sounds and songwriting,

Q4. What are you just doing (release, live, recording, promo, study, work, vacance, etc..)?
LP: We’re currently working on recording our album, but we’ll be heading to the South by Southwest festival in March to play some shows!

Q5. What do you value most in music life?
CJU: I value the opportunity to search for meaning in the world and to try to leave something beautiful behind.
LP: I love making music, but mostly I do it not because it’s pleasurable necessarily, but because I feel in my soul that I have to do it. I can’t imagine doing anything else. I feel lucky that I have a burning desire to do something in my life, some people don’t have a passion.

Q6. What was the first tape, record or CD you bought for yourself and when?
LP: I purchased Queen’s Greatest Hits II when I was 6. There was a record store near my house called Waxie Maxie’s and my mom and I would go there all the time. I was obsessed with the song “Under Pressure”.
CJU: I always just listened to my parent’s CDs and tapes until I was maybe 9 or 10 and my neighbor lent me all his Nirvana CDs. Then I got really into grunge.

Q7. What is most favorite music now?
LP: I am always going through phases. I used to be strictly nostalgia-obsessed, wishing I was born 40 years earlier in California and was playing acoustic guitar in Laurel Canyon. I still listen to classic rock on the radio whenever I’m in the car, but I’ve also really gotten into bands that are pushing the boundaries by using technology in innovative ways like James Blake and Purity Ring. New bands I am digging include Fyfe, Empress Of, Indians, and MØ.

Q8. What is the dream in the future?
LP: To do something great that changes the way people live their lives and see the world.
CJU: To keep getting better, and to figure out a way to give back to a world that has given me so much.

CJU: 音楽づくりはこの世界に意味を見つける機会を与えてくれる。それを大切にして、美しいものを生み出して残していきたい。
LP: 曲作りは大好き。でも、必ずしも楽しいからやっているわけじゃなくて、自分がやるべきことはこれなんだって魂で感じるから曲を作るの。他のことをやっている自分なんて想像がつかない。これをやりたいって燃えるような思いを持てるのってラッキーだと思ってるわ。情熱を見つけられない人もいるものね。

Q6 最初に買ったテープ・CD・レコードは何だった？いくつの時？
LP: 6歳の時に買ったQueenの『Greatest Hits II』。うちの近くにWaxie Maxie’sっていうレコード屋があって、母としょっちゅう行ってた。『Under Pressure』って曲が大好きでずっと聴いてた。
CJU: ずっと親が持ってるCDやカセットを聴いてるだけだったんだけど、9歳か10歳くらいの時に近所の人が持ってるNirvanaのCDを全部貸してくれたんだ。それですっかりグランジにハマった。

Q7 今一番ハマってる音楽は？
LP: その時その時で違うのよね。前まではどっぷり懐古主義に浸ってて、40年前のカリフォルニアで生まれてればよかった、ローレル・キャニオンでアコースティックギターを弾きたかった、なんて思ってたわ。運転する時は今でもラジオでクラシックロックを聴くけど、今はテクノロジーを面白い感じに使ってるアーティストもすごく好きなの。James BlakeとかPurity Ringとかね。他にも、Fyfe、 Empress Of、 IndiansやMØは最近ハマってるアーティスト。

Q8 将来の夢は？
LP: 人々の生き方とか世界の見方を変えるようなすごいことをやりたい。
CJU: 成長し続けること。この世界からもらったたくさんのものに恩返しをする方法を見つけること。

Q2. How did you start this band?
We met at university about 5 years ago, starting as a cover band and later beginning to make our own music which in turn became the electro-pop sound that we have today.

Q3. Who is the artist from whom you were influenced?
A lot of artists inspire us, but to mention a few; we listen a lot to The Postal Service, Radio Dept. and M83. The Postal Service has had a great impact on our sound, partly because Marcus sounds a bit like Ben Gibbard when singing but most of all because their way of creating music is inspiring in itself. It is about trying to make music simple and focusing on an easy and compelling melodies.

Q4. What are you just doing (release, live, recording, promo, study, work, vacancy, etc..)?
One member is studying for a Master in Economics at the moment and the remaining two members have full-time jobs in line with their education consisting of a Master of Science in Media Tech­nology. As for the music, we are currently recording new songs so that we can have a wider range of material when performing live.

Q5. What do you value most in music life?
All songs are based on feelings sprung from periods in life consisting of joy or sorrow, building up to a point where they musically and lyrically strive to tell a story. This is the essence of our work: to make people happy, sad, joyful or to have any other feeling that they feel while listening – there are no right or wrongs in music, just whatever meaning listeners put into the melody, a song’s lyrics or both. We aim to make people feel something when listening.

Q6. What was the first tape, record or CD you bought for yourself and when?
Marcus A: One of the first albums I bought was in 1994 when I, as a nine-year-old boy, bought an album from the Swedish indie-pop band Jumper.
Yin Fai Chan: There has been a lot of CD:s bought over the years, but one of the first CD:s I bought was probably some album by Metallica.
Marcus W: I have always borrowed (read: taken) a lot of records from my father’s or sister’s CD collection, ranging from The Beatles to Swedish singer-songwriters, but one of the first records I bought for myself was Nick Drake’s album Bryter Layter.

Q7. What is most favourite music now?
If we were to recommend some tracks that we listen to a lot at the moment it would be:
The Vaccines – If you wanna, The Heartbrakes – Delay, delay, Cut copy – Need you now, The tallest man on earth – Leading me now, The Shins – A comet appears, Bombay bicycle club – Shuffle, LP – Levitator, Grimes – Oblivion, Hellsingland underground – I just don’t believe in love.

Q8. What is the dream in the future?
To be big in Japan (laughing), no but seriously the goal has always been to make more songs and reach a larger audience that enjoy listening to our music. Whether this means playing for 20 people in the local pub or an arena with 20 000 does not really matter since both of the situations mean reaching out to people with our music.

5年位前に大学でメンバーが出会ったんだ。最初はカヴァーバンドだったんだけど、そのうち自分たちの曲を作るようになって、今のエレクトロ・ポップのサウンドにたどり着いたんだよ。

Q3 影響を受けたアーティストは？
たくさんいるけど、いくつか挙げるなら、The Postal Service、Radio Dept、M83かな。The Postal Serviceは、僕らのサウンドにかなり影響を与えてる。Marcusの歌声がちょっとBen Gibbardに似てるからっていうこともあるんだけど、何より曲の作り方そのものが僕らにとってはすごく参考になる。曲を複雑にせずに、シンプルでパワフルなメロディーを大切にしようとする、それがすべてなんだ。

Q4 最近はどんな活動をしてますか？
メンバーのうち1人は今、経済学の修士を目指してて、あとの2人はメディアテクノロジーの修士を活かしてフルタイムで働いてる。バンドとしては新しい曲のレコーディング中。次にライブをする時にやれる曲が増えるからね。

Q5 音楽をやっていて一番大切にしている事は？
僕らの曲はどれも、これまでの人生の喜びや悲しみに満ちた時間から生まれてる。その時の感情が、メロディーや歌詞を通じてストーリーを語り始めるんだ。僕らの音楽の本質は、聴いている人に感情を与えること。幸福感、悲しみ、喜び、どんな感情でもいい。音楽には正しいも間違ってるもない。ただ、聴く人にとって、曲のメロディーや歌詞、その両方が意味をもつんだ。僕らの曲を聴いて、何かを感じてほしい。

Q6 最初に買ったテープ・CD・レコードは何だった？いくつの時？
Marcus A: 1994年、9歳の時。買ったのはスウェーデンのインディー・ポップのアーティスト、Jumperのアルバムだった。
Yin Fai Chan: 子どもの頃からCDはたくさん買ったけど、はじめて買ったのはMetallicaのアルバムだったと思う。
Marcus W: 父や姉のCDコレクションからよく「借りて」（もらって、ともいえる）たよ。The Beatlesから、スウェーデンのシンガーソングライターまで色々。自分で初めて買ったアルバムは、Nick Drakeの『Bryter Layter』かな。

日本でビッグになること（笑）。でも本当に、もっと曲を作ってもっとたくさんの人に僕らの曲を楽しんでもらいたいんだ。地元のパブで20人相手にライブをするのも、アリーナで2万人を前にライブをするのも変わらないと思ってる。どちらも、音楽を通して人とつながっているという意味では一緒だからね。
