Interview : Art Imperial [P+M#10]

Q1. Please Introduce Yourself.
Hello P+M readers! My name is Art Imperial hailing from Toronto, Canada.

Q2. How did you start this band?
While I loved the feeling of camaraderie in the many bands I’ve been in throughout my life, I have always wanted to be in full control of the song writing and production process. As such, my first step was to create a home studio but times were tough and I was on a limited budget. Thankfully my brother ( loaned me a shit load of gear to get started and I scoured Craigslist (a local used buy/sell website) to procure the other hardware I needed. In the winter of 2010 I began recording my solo project under the name Art Imperial and have released two albums since.

Q3. Who is the artist from whom you were influenced?
The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Nirvana, Radiohead, The Smiths, Jeff Buckley, French Kicks, my Family.

The Beatles、Michael Jackson、Nirvana、Radiohead、The Smiths、Jeff Buckley、French Kicks、

Q4. What are you just doing (release, live, recording, promo, study, work, vacance, etc..)?
My plan at the moment is to continue writing, producing and releasing as much music as possible to get the attention of blogs, magazines, labels and a larger listening audience. I’m also working on my PhD in Political Science so my time is split between reading and writing on Nietzsche and Franz Fanon and listening to old Phil Spector Records, trying to mimic his sounds and fucking around with Ableton settings.

Q5. What do you value most in music life?
There is a real feeling of therapy in making music. Some people go to a psychiatrist to unload their problems. I go to my guitar, sing out my life and the difference is at the end of my session I have a song to give to the world.

Q6. What was the first tape, record or CD you bought for yourself and when?
It wasn’t the first tape I bought but I have a very strong memory of buying Nirvana’s In Utero album the first time I went to the Philippines in the early-90s. I had it on repeat on my Sony Walkmen walking through the streets of Manila and taking a bus into my home province of Illocos Norte. On our way there, the bus stopped and we were stuck on this dirt road beside these immense rice fields and mountains in the distance because a herd of water buffalo were blocking the road. Seeing all this while listening to ‘Scentless Apprentice’ will be forever embedded in my memory.

Q7. What is most favorite music now?
I’m oversaturated with music, constantly downloading albums, discographies even that I’ll never fully be able to absorb. With this feeling of oversaturation I feel unable to pin down my one favourite but here are a couple tracks/albums that have been on heavy rotation on my iTunes: Lee Fields – You’re the Kinda Girl, The Walkmen – The Love you Love, Ariel Pink – Baby, Tennis – My Better Self, Chains of Love – In Between, Dirty Beaches – White Sands, Mazzy Star – Black Sessions, Chromatics – Kill For Love (Drumless).

Lee Fields – You’re the Kinda Girl, The Walkmen – The Love you Love, Ariel Pink – Baby, Tennis – My Better Self, Chains of Love – In Between, Dirty Beaches – White Sands, Mazzy Star – Black Sessions, Chromatics – Kill For Lovee (Drumless)。

Q8. What is the dream in the future?
To be able to live off of making music.

The success of independent artists is dependent on you, those enthusiastic, erudite readers who fervently search the margins for bursts of creativity that the mainstream has either ignored or hasn’t had access to. Your power as music-listeners is to bring these creative margins to the fore by sharing this music through your social networks, bringing light to similar music lovers around the globe. Take action and share my music as well as the music of the other artists in this magazine. Give our music to the world as if you were giving a gift to a friend. And plus, if you send this interview to 10 of your friends then you will be forever good-looking, successful and all your wishes will come true
