P+M#11 Interview : Personal Boy

Personal Boy

Q1. Please Introduce Yourself.
Greetings. My name is Drew Bond. Thank you for your interest in our music.

Q2. How did you start this band?
I’m used to working with more experimental Indie Rock projects, and I wanted to try something that was an outright Indie Pop project. Something easy to move to, with instantly relatable lyrics. I called a long time collaborator, Tom Essex, and pitched the idea to him. He got on board right away, and I started writing songs. I knew I didn’t want to sing the songs myself, so luckily we were able to get Lindsey Tuller involved, whose voice you hear on the recordings.

Q3. Who is the artist from whom you were influenced?
There are certain bands that got me interested in electronic music and incorporating it with live sounds, like Radiohead, NIN, Postal Service, Aphex Twin, etc. And a big influence on this project is pop music. Anything that has a great hook, mood, and memorable lyrics, like the Sinead O’Connor version of “Nothing Compares to You” or “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin.

Q4. What are you just doing?
We’ve just released our 2nd EP. It’s called “Accidental Touch.” Lately we’ve been playing some shows in our home town of Jacksonville, Florida, and have also done some out of town shows.

Q5. What do you value most in music life?
I like writing. I like putting together a song, and working it out to completion with a group of musicians. And of course, playing live.

Q6. What was the first tape, record or CD you bought for yourself and when?
Some of the early compact discs that were present during my developing years were “The Blue Album” by Weezer and “Tragic Kingdom” by No Doubt. My mom had a tape of “The Wall” by Pink Floyd, which is probably the biggest influence on my musical upbringing.

Q7. What is most favorite music now?
Dirty Projectors, MGMT, Radiohead, Vampire Weekend, St. Vincent, etc.

Q8. What is the dream in the future?
It would be great to get as many people to hear the music as possible. Playing in Japan would be cool! I’m just going to keep making records, and maybe one day make a good one.

Q9. Please Message to readers.
Thanks again for involving us in this publication. We hope you enjoy the music, and have a lovely day!

何にしろ凄く引き付ける物があって、雰囲気があって、記憶に残る歌詞で、Sinead O’Connorの『Nothing Compares to You』やBerlinの『Take My Breath Away』のようなね。

『Accidental Touch.』

Dirty Projectors、MGMT、Radiohead、Vampire Weekend、St. Vincent
